Interlude VIII

Everybody was already, or still, around the campfire when the HGM came back while making his clothes look decent. He sat back down next to Guido, grabbed the clipboard from his bag, and a pen, shuffled to the paper he needed and then looked at Guido.

“All ready for those last characters. Let’s do this.” He said.

Guido nodded and threw a leaf from the ground into the fire.

“Right. Tests for the crafters comprised a class on the crafting system and each crafter could get a little bag with a recipe in it and then had to work with the merchants to get the components. The items thus crafted could either be used in the tournament by any of the four sides or be kept until a later date. Now. Maysant is a woodworker, and that is her only craft. She actually looked through all the recipes before deciding which one she wanted to do. But otherwise she followed orders, and she worked beautifully.”

He grabbed an acorn and threw that into the fire while Raoul made his notes.

“Next. Gidianqa. She listened well to orders and to the class. When she couldn’t quite work out how the recipe needed to be read, she got angry and started cursing. Maysant, though from a different craft, calmed her down and called the other crafters together to look at all the different recipes and work out how they needed to be read. I think Maysant is a good influence on all of them. But we were discussing Gidianqa. And well, after she calmed down, she did some excellent work.”

Raoul finished his notes as Guido grabbed a tiny twig and threw it into the fire.

“Next to last. Elre. Easily the oldest of the crafters. Also, the only male. Dedicated blacksmith. He listened well to orders. He was keen to do things. However, he was constantly counting everything around him, which confused people. It was definitely related to his excitement, because the more eager he got about Fearless and crafting, the more he started counting things. Maysant in the end just started patting him on the shoulder when he did so. He was the oldest of them, but everyone ended up doting on him and making him the group grandpa of sorts. The merchants weren’t necessarily as enamoured with him, but he did his tests well, so they didn’t complain, really.”

Guido just watched Raoul finish his notes and then took a deep breath.

“And then. FINALLY, we have Thasa.” Before Guido could continue talking, there was a small cheer from the surrounding group. He gave a small one of his own and then continued talking. “Yes, very exciting. Now Thasa is a merchant herself next to a crafter. So she went and made a deal for her recipe. She went looking through all the recipes and selected which one she liked best. She had plenty of merchants vying for her attention and recipe, so she had plenty of opportunity. Thasa used it to her advantage to help the others get a good team of merchants. Elre was also particularly taken with Thasa and she tried to use that to her advantage in calming him down and giving him things to count. She listened to orders very well and did well in the class.”

The entire group watched Raoul pen the last notes and put a period with great finality. Then he looked at the group. “Do we really need to discuss who won’t get in? I don’t think we heard anything that should keep them from Fearless. So I’m calling that they’re all in. That’s a wrap, everyone. I will make sure that there are lists for the masters tomorrow for their meetings and the inauguration. Remember Marnix, you’re doing the inauguration for Ottkatla, behind the castle at the same time as the others. Eline will be with you to give you timing and such. Make sure that you’re back in front before the end of the rest of the inauguration. Come on, guys, let’s go listen to some music.” Raoul said, and another little cheer went up. Mart made sure that the fire was out and then everyone left the NPC area to rejoin the players in their revelry.
